When he arrived, Carl entered a Catholic Cathedral and heard the Japanese civilians praying the rosary. He was never sure why he chose the Navy since he couldn't swim. Carl, a celebrated strike-out pitcher known for his curveball, was signed by the Boston Braves in 1946, but chose to serve his country by joining the Navy during WWII. He then played on the Dormont Club of the Greater Pittsburgh League where he was coached by Honus Wagner and shared the field with recently-retired "Big Poison" Paul Waner. Basil's High School, during which he pitched for the Carrick All-Stars. Carl was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 11, 1927. Carl loved the Lord, supported numerous Catholic schools and charities, and was eventually convinced by his wife that, outside of a golf course, Ireland was heaven on earth. They were passionate about the sanctity of human life and supported the pro-life cause in word and deed. He and Mary Jane raised a large and loving family, whom they often described as "having arrived from God with pleasant regularity." Their family of nine children and two adopted nieces was their greatest joy and their greatest desire was to help those children achieve their dreams. Carl gave his all to family, friends, and strangers alike, always mindful of those in need. It has been said that during a man's lifetime, he is best known for his deeds, but when he is gone, he is best remembered for his generosity.

He is survived by his sister, Margie Bankert. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph and Margaret his brother, Joseph (Anne) his sisters, Mary Hirsh (John), Mildred Brickner (Bill), Florence Granger (Dick) and a niece, Anita Kelly Cosgrove. He was the cherished husband for 62 years of Mary Jane (Kelly) Grefenstette, the love of his life, who preceded him in death in 2013 beloved father of Carl (Karen McCrea), John (Deb), Mary Jane Bowes (Jerry Morgan), Greg (Irene), Carol (David Bates), Jerry (Megan Marie), Jim (Tess), Edward (Megan Elizabeth), Jennifer Grefenstette Coblin (Harvey), and Lisa Kelly Goodall (Matt) adored grandfather of 25, and devoted great-grandfather of 9 (with 4 more on the way!). Carl Grefenstette, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed peacefully into heavenly paradise, on June 4, 2022, one week shy of his 95th birthday, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Another member of the Greatest Generation has left this earth.
